Jack Gleadow – Mr Saturday Night

By cannon303 |

Multi Award-winning stand-up comedian and Hull local Jack Gleadow is one of the most unique performers on the UK comedy circuit today. With his own distinctive comedy voice, Jack takes his inspiration from the golden era of variety with influences such as Norman Wisdom, Bruce Forsyth and Lee Evans. This talented young physical comedian is a one-man stand-up variety show whose use of sounds, stories and jokes (and even a scooter!) are a joy to behold.

When Jack Gleadow was born, Whigfield’s Saturday Night was number 1 in the charts – but what does Saturday Night mean to Jack? This show is a love letter to the entertainers of the past and comedy’s traditional beginnings with Saturday night TV that had something for everyone. It details his unique story of growing up and falling in love with performing.

As a child he took an early interest in magic and originally became a magician travelling the world before eventually being kicked out and banned from the magic circle at the tender age of 14! After a brief stint working at Primark, Jack fell back in love with comedy from the old school era and especially comedians who had catchphrases and were stalwarts on Saturday night telly! His dream was to become the new Bruce Forsyth!  Watch him as he takes you on a journey of laughter through stand-up, magic, music, dance and audience participation. Jack is a comedy one-man-band. A jack of all trades and master of fun!

Jack is in huge demand on the live comedy scene. All well as performing across the top UK comedy clubs he has performed at festivals such as Latitude and Glastonbury, and has also provided tour support for Lloyd Griffith and Carl Hutchinson. He has won and been nominated for numerous awards that include his win as the 2017 Amused Moose National New Comic, 2018 Leicester Mercury Comedian of The Year and this year’s nominations for Chortle’s Best Newcomer and at the Leicester Comedy Festivals’ for Best New Show.

“An absolute natural” Chortle

“A crowd-pleasing, unashamed throwback to the golden age of variety” The Scotsman

‘…quite obviously a star in the making. He has the kind of mainstream appeal that suggests he could be as big as someone like Lee Evans one day. He certainly has funny bones” BEYOND THE JOKE Bruce Dessau

New programme at Ropery Hall

By cannon303 |

The new season at Barton upon Humber’s Ropery Hall gets underway early next month with the return of the 3hattrio playing the distinctive sounds of  American Desert Music.

The gig, on Thursday, September 5, heralds the start of four months of non-stop music, comedy, theatre and film at the Maltkiln Road venue.

Included in the programme are old favourites such as Snake Davis, playing with his band in September and then returning on the last Sunday from September to November with invited guests as well as playing out 2019 with his band Alligator Shoes.

Other highlights include comedy in the form of Angela Barnes with her sell-out Edinburgh Fringe Show, Rose-Tinted and Tom Binns and his alter-ego Ivan Brackenbury as well as the Barnstormers Comedy Club.

Hue and Cry will be touching down at Ropery Hall in October as part of the group’s 30th anniversary celebrations while the Budapest Café Orchestra will be celebrating its 10th anniversary in November.

There’s a strong representation of theatre too and one production, 12 Silk Handkerchiefs, Songs & Storytelling, is particularly close to home as Reg Meuross’s moving work of social and political history, inspired by Brian W. Lavery’s book The Headscarf Revolutionaries, opens a window on Hull’s Hessle Road fishing community and fighting fishwife Lillian Billoca’s successful campaign for improved trawler safety in the aftermath of the 1968 Triple Trawler Disaster.  Reg’s powerful songs are interwoven with narration from Brian W. Lavery and rare archive footage from the time the ships went down.

As well as Night Terrors with Gerard Logan, based on the spine-tingling tales of the supernatural from E.F. Benson’s brilliant collection of ghost stories, and Shackleton’s Carpenter telling the tale of the ill-fated voyage by the explorer to Antarctica, Robert Ross, comedy historian, will be saluting perennial Christmas treats in an affectionate celebration.  Expect Laurel and Hardy, The Two Ronnies, Morecambe and Wise and more!

There’s also monthly quiz nights and a film programme of matinees and evening screenings.
